Understanding the 2026 Australian Building Code Changes for Imported Materials

The ABCB has updated its guidance on product conformity for imported building materials. Here is what Australian builders, designers, and developers need to know when sourcing from overseas.

Understanding the 2026 Australian Building Code Changes for Imported Materials

The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) recently released updated guidance on product conformity for imported building materials, with significant implications for anyone sourcing from China. At My Building List, we work closely with compliance experts to ensure every material we supply meets the latest Australian standards.

What Changed in 2026?

The 2026 National Construction Code (NCC) introduces clearer pathways for demonstrating compliance for imported materials, particularly in the areas of:

  • WaterMark certification for plumbing products
  • CodeMark and CodeMark Australia for innovative building products
  • ISO/IEC 17065 accredited certification bodies for general building products
  • Product Technical Statements (PTS) as supporting documentation

What This Means for Your Project

For builders and developers, the key takeaway is that compliance documentation must be traceable and verifiable. Simply having a certificate from a factory is no longer sufficient — the certificate must be issued by an ABCB-recognized body, and the product must match the certified specification exactly.

"The biggest risk we see is specification drift — where the product that arrives on site differs from the one that was certified. Our pre-shipment QC process is designed to catch this before the container leaves China."

How MBL Ensures Compliance

Our six-step process includes dedicated compliance checks:

  1. Factory audit to verify ISO 9001 certification and production capabilities
  2. Sample testing against Australian standards (where applicable)
  3. Certificate verification with issuing bodies
  4. Pre-shipment inspection to confirm product matches specification
  5. Full documentation pack with certificates, test reports, and customs declarations
  6. Post-delivery support for any compliance queries from certifiers or councils

Looking Ahead

As the NCC continues to evolve, we expect tighter requirements around sustainability reporting and carbon footprint documentation. MBL is already working with our factory partners to develop supply chain transparency reports that will meet these emerging standards.
